Tatsuya IWAI Lighting Designer

After studying architecture under the influence of his father who was an architect, Iwai met architectural lighting design and started working on it as his profession. Since then, he worked on designing lightings of various public architectures such as Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, National Art Center, Tokyo. In 2015, he won the award of Best Lighting Design of the Illumination Engineering Institute of Japan for his work on the Heiseichishinkan Wing of the National Museum of Kyoto (Architecture design: Yoshio TANIGUCHI). He is currently lecturer at Kanto Gakuin University, and professional member of International Association of Lighting Designers.

In the east zone where architectures from Taisho and Showa era stand, the installation art will represent the street of old good days by projecting shadows of people coming and going.

Also in the workshop, you can try projecting real shadow pictures on the second-floor part of the building.

Gas lamp in Tailor’s Workshop

Gas lamp had commonly spread in Tokyo city in Taisho period as room light. Now, a gas lamp existent in a reconstructed architecture “Tailor’s Workshop” will be lit exclusively during the event.

A fire will be lit in open-hearths in reconstructed architecture “Farmhouse of the Yoshino Family”, “Farmhouse of the Tsunashima Family” and “House of the Leader of the Hachioji Guards”. Warm up your heart and body by firesides!

Making Papercutting of Buildings’ Pattern

Let’s walk around the museum finding patterns of architectures and make them into papercutting cards. After completing cards, throw lights on them and enjoy exhibition of Shadows!

*Completed works will be exhibited in “Tokiwadai Photo Studio” during the period of “Illumination of Fall Foliage and Buildings”.

For:Elder than junior high school student / Capacity: 20 persons

Various hot drinks and foods are served. Please have a relaxed time in the east zone where 1000 candles are fantastically lit.

  • -This event is of illumination with faint light. Also, the site of the museum will be very dark in the night. Please mind your step on your visiting in the museum.
  • -Using tripods are prohibited in buildings and some of gardens on your photographing. Also please mind safety of yourself and others when using photographing assistant goods such as tripods and selfie sticks, even in area where the use is allowed, for expected congestion on the days.
  • -It may be cold in the night. Please mind to wear warm clothes.
